Students from Years 7-9 took part in a ‘Sponsored Read’ from 4th to 22nd March as part of Teign School’s World Book Day events. They recorded every page they read in a reading log in order to transform pages turned into money! Students then nominated where the money they raised went; either to ‘Cancer Research UK’ (the charity chosen by the School Council) or to ‘Teign Treats’, a pot of money that will be used to provide additional rewards and treats for the students.
In the end, 73 students raised an amazing sum of £1,298.97 (£945.22 for the Cancer charity and the rest for the School’s treats fund). On Friday 3rd May, Manager Claire Truscott and Sales Assistant Paula Vine from Cancer Research UK’s Newton Abbot shop visited the School’s library to receive the money raised by the students.
“What an amazing amount of money the students have raised. This will support the research preventing Cancer in all age groups,” Claire Truscott said.
The top fundraisers were invited to be part of the big cheque presentation. These six students raised an incredible £260 between them! The event builds on the School’s ‘Reading for Pleasure award 2018/19’, encouraging the students to increase the amount they read (whilst in this case making money for good causes).
“The Sponsored Read was good fun. I entered the world of my book and before I knew it I had raised money for Cancer Research!” said Adriana Dodd from Year 7
This was echoed by Erin Wotton (Year 8) who said “During the Sponsored Read I really got into the Harry Potter books. Now I want to read more in my own time.”
