Key Stages in Your Education Journey

Secondary education is full of important milestones where young people make choices that shape their future:

  • Year 9 Options – This is the first big step. Students choose the subjects they’ll study for GCSEs, balancing interests, strengths, and future aspirations. It’s a chance to explore passions while keeping doors open for later opportunities.
  • Post-16 Choices – After GCSEs, students decide whether to continue in sixth form, attend college, start an apprenticeship, or pursue other training. This stage is about building specialist knowledge and skills that prepare them for higher education or the workplace.
  • Post-18 Pathways – At this point, young people can move on to university, higher apprenticeships, or enter full-time employment. It’s the stage where career ambitions start to take shape and long-term goals come into focus.

Each stage is an exciting opportunity to plan ahead, explore options, and take steps toward a rewarding future.

Supporting Decisions at Every Stage

Students and parents have access to a range of online platforms designed to guide them through key educational choices. At Teign, learners are introduced to these platforms and given the chance to explore them in different settings — with tutors in school, at home alongside parents, and with the support of our dedicated Careers Advisor.
